October 2021 A39 Road Closure

Getting to Dunster and Exmoor is usually straightforward and such a lovely scenic drive. Well from 11th October during weekdays between 9:30am-3:30pm it will become a bit more scenic!

From 11th October Somerset County Council (SCC) Highways are teaming up with Somerset Rivers Authority (SRA) to deliver a £350,000 drainage improvement scheme to improve the A39 at Carhampton Cross which is well known for flooding during the Autumn and Winter months. (https://www.somersetcountygazette.co.uk/news/19599994.a39-carhampton-close-next-month-flood-improvement-works/)

This will mean the main road towards Dunster is closed from 9:30am to 3:30pm during the week to carry out this work. Outside these hours temporary traffic lights will be in place to allow one way traffic through.

Once the A39 element of the work is completed, the road will be closed for a further five evenings between 6:30pm and 11:30pm for the resurfacing, subject to weather conditions.

Recommended Diversion

Travelling westbound towards Minehead you will be diverted onto the B3190 near Tropiquaria and follow the road towards Raleigh’s Cross (turning right at The Raleigh’s Cross in Pub) then the next right (about three quarters of a mile) turn onto the B3224 which will take you towards Wheddon Cross. When you reach Wheddon Cross you will come to a stop sign at the junction of the Rest and Be Thankful pub, turn right here and follow this road – the A396 to Dunster!

We recommend if you are visiting the area between these hours you take the diversions below, we have created Google Map links for these to make it easy to follow.
